Submarine acquisition in Norway and Germany:
A success story for TKMS and
Bertel O. Steen spanning two decades
Norway has chosen Germany as a strategic partner for new submarines and will acquire identical submarines together with Germany. The agreements for this were signed in July 2021. The construction of the first boat started in 2023, and has an estimated delivery in 2029. The Norwegian part of the project has a total budget of around NOK 45 billion.
This is a huge contract, and it was in no part brought on by luck – but required a strategic effort through the course of many years. Bertel O. Steen is an advisor to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (tkMS), and has been working with the submarine supplier since the delivery of the Ula class to the Norwegian navy in 1988 – 1991. This success is the result of long-term and close teamwork between a dedicated team at Bertel O. Steen and a large organization at tkMS in Kiel.
Our main tasks have been ongoing strategic advice for tkMS, including, amongst other things, analyses, information gathering, work with industrial cooperation agreements and close contact with a wide range of Norwegian stakeholders at all levels. We are proud on behalf of the whole team and look forward to keeping up our contribution towards the delivery date and through essential maintenance activities in the future.
